If you're currently on a massive server like mastodon.social, you might want to consider moving your account to a smaller server.
You can keep your followers when you change servers, here's how to do it: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107939441820299376
You can find reliable servers at https://joinmastodon.org/communities (all the servers listed there agree to the covenant at https://joinmastodon.org/covenant). Try to pick one with fewer people.
There are lots of good things about smaller servers:
-Better moderation, because there are more staff per member.
-Smaller servers tend to have more personality, with a village feel.
-The local timeline on smaller servers is much more readable.
-Smaller servers protect the Fediverse as a whole from being taken over, because lots of smaller servers are harder to buy than a few big servers.
-It's easier to make a difference on smaller servers. It's easier to discuss things with the admin and other members.
Services are naturally hostile to communities, because services cannot protect communities.
And the corollary here is, when you pick an instance, are you picking to join a service or a community?
A service won't really care if you have a bad time. A community, if you fit with that community, will.

"The best way to fight climate change is to massively reduce consumption that causes greenhouse gas emissions. Historically, Barandiarán said, we have tended to use more of everything, regardless of new technology. “When we transitioned from lumber to coal, we still used more lumber than we used before,” she said. “When we transitioned from coal to oil, we still used more coal than we did before.” Thinking of climate change as a problem to be solved through more markets, she said, means locking us into a high-consumption lifestyle. “That fundamentally has to change," she said."
Either the West gets rid of it's addiction to energy or we all die a horrible death. There is no easy way out of this. Technology won't save us. The market won't save us.
Hyvältä näyttää. Tilaus lähti liikkeelle, nyt jännittää. Haaveissa on siis kaupunkiautoilun korvaaminen pyöräilyllä lähes 100 %.
One thing that tripped me up when I joined Mastodon was this: Let's say you ask a question and both I and another friend of yours follow your account. We are all on different instances. Your question gets sent to both of our instances (yay federation). I reply to the question, and it gets sent back to your instance, but not to your friend. Your friend doesn't follow my account, so they don't get sent my reply. That's why they might end up posting the exact same reply. 1/2
We have informed Apple of our preliminary view that it abused its dominant position in markets for mobile wallets on iOS devices.
Our preliminarily findings show that Apple may have restricted competition, to the benefit of its solution Apple Pay.
PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁
There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the symbol is not one of them.
The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106274105538953001).
Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at https://social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.
Mastodon PSA, mostly for admins
Mastodon has a thing called AUTHORIZED_FETCH. You should almost definitely enable it.
Some people say "but blocked instances can still see my posts" well not with this thing on. This makes server check who is trying to get your posts and will yeet all the blocked instances. That's what all modern software just assumes but it prevents Scaling (and relays) so it's not on by default.

If you are on masto.host you can ask this to be enabled.
